LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell seniors Tara Cort (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) were named to the 11-person Academic All-Patriot League Team on Tuesday. Both student-athletes have been standouts both in the classroom and on the soccer field throughout their Bucknell careers.
For Cort, the academic citation comes one day after she earned First Team All-Patriot League honors. One of the top central midfielders in the league, Cort was a dynamic two-way player for the Bison. She started all 36 games over the last two seasons after transferring to Bucknell from Clemson.
Off the field, Cort earned stellar 3.95 grade-point averages at both Bucknell and Clemson, where she has majored in economics and financial management, respectively. A perennial Dean's List honoree, Cort interned last summer at PWC Financial Services in Boston. She has also been involved in community service, volunteering with a local food bank and with highway cleanup.
DeGennaro was a two-year starter and four-year contributor for the Bison, playing forward and outside midfield. She was the team's leading scorer in 2011 with six points, coming on a goal and four assists, and her assist total ranks fourth in the Patriot League. DeGennaro scored the biggest goal of her career on Oct. 23 against Lafayette, finishing a breakaway in sudden-death overtime to give Bucknell a critical 2-1 Patriot League win over the Leopards.
DeGennaro has been equally impressive away from soccer. A double major in economics and international relations, with a minor in Spanish, DeGennaro has compiled a 3.70 cumulative grade-point average. She spent the spring 2011 semester studying at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, where she took four courses in business and culture, all in Spanish. She is a member of Sigma Iota Rho international relations honor society, and she co-chairs that organization's public relations committee
DeGennaro is also a member of STAND, which is Bucknell's branch of the national student anti-genocide coalition. She participated in Bloodwater Bracelet campaign to raise funds to build wells in Africa, and she is a member of Microfinance Initiative Bucknell (MIB), a student group that manages a faculty and alumni-supported fund and offers loans to low-income entrepreneurs. DeGennaro has interned in the finance department at Xirrus, Inc., in Thousand Oaks, Calif., in each of the last three summers, and she also serves as a teaching assistant in the economics department at Bucknell.
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The women's soccer team has 11 student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team. Student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or a key reserve. Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's sports information directors, who cannot vote for their own student-athletes.
