LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams will face Patriot League foes American, Lafayette, and Navy in Annapolis, Md., Saturday, Nov. 5 at 12 p.m. It will be the first Patriot League meet of the year for the Bison.
The Bucknell men will be competing two weeks after their first scored meet against George Washington, which they won 168-89. Bucknell had at least two of the top three finishers in 11 of the first 12 events contested, sweeping the top three spots in the 500 free and 100 fly. Mike Nicholson added his name to another top 10 list (1,000-yard freestyle) after finishing in 9:40.35, which earned him the fifth spot on the list.
This is the fifth straight year the Bison will be participating in this Patriot League quad meet in November. The location rotates between Bucknell and Navy, depending on which school is hosting that year's Patriot League Championships. The past four years the Bison have gone 2-1 in this meet, beating American and Lafayette each year. Bucknell is 4-3 all-time against American, 47-4 all-time opposite Lafayette and 0-8 against Navy. The Bison have won four in a row against the Eagles and have not lost to the Leopards since the 1993-94 campaign.
Currently, Bucknell is 1-0 for the 2011-2012 season. American will open the scored-meet portion of its season against its Patriot League opponents, while Lafayette comes in 0-2, and Navy is 4-0.
The Bison women's team started off strong against George Washington two weeks ago, winning 169-124 over the Colonials. Bucknell captured first place in eight of the 16 events, and it had two of the top-three finishers in 13 events. Freshman Lauren Perry won the 200 free, finishing in 1 minute, 54.39 seconds, which ranks her 10th on the program's all-time list. Fellow rookie Katie Hetherington won both diving events, after earning Patriot League Female Diver of the Week two weeks earlier.
Like the men, this is the fifth consecutive year that the women have participated in this Patriot League quad meet. The Bison have finished 2-1 each of the past four years. Overall, Bucknell is 7-1 against American, 29-2-2 opposite Lafayette, and 5-9 against Navy.
The Bison women are off to a 1-0 start this season. The Eagles have yet to participate in a scored meet, while the Leopards enter the weekend 0-2, and the Midshipmen are 2-2.
Both Bucknell squads will be idle for two weeks following Saturday's meet. They will next be in action on Nov. 18-20, when they will host the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium.
