LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's soccer team had two players named to the All-Patriot League Team on Tuesday, as senior midfielder Tara Cort (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) earned First Team honors while junior goalkeeper Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) picked up a Second Team citation. These are the first all-conference honors for both Cort and McDermott.
Cort was a standout center midfielder for the Bison over the last two seasons after transferring to Bucknell from Clemson. She started all 36 games over the last two years and was often dominant in the middle of the field. Cort did not pile up prolific scoring numbers, but she was a standout tackler, was strong in the air and was one of the best in the league with the ball at her feet.
A team co-captain in 2011, Cort did collect a goal and four assists during her Bucknell career. Her two assists this season were both big ones, coming two weeks ago in a critical weekend sweep of Lehigh and Lafayette. She assisted on Evelyn Nicinski's goal in a 1-0 win over Lehigh, and two days later she set up Megan DeGennaro for the golden goal in a 2-1 overtime win over Lafayette.
McDermott becomes the third Bucknell goalkeeper to earn All-Patriot League honors, joining Becky Snover in 1995 and Kathryn Sutton in 2007 and 2009. McDermott enjoyed her best season to date in 2011, posting an .835 save percentage and a 1.14 goals-against average. She ranked third in the Patriot League in save percentage and second in saves per game (5.4).
On Bucknell's all-time single-season charts, McDermott's 1.14 GAA ranks third in program history, and she backstopped a Bison defense that conceded the second-fewest goals (19) in team history.
McDermott made seven or more saves in a game six times, including a career-high 14 stops against Marist. She posted four shutouts this season and was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 24 after collecting 17 saves in the two wins over Lehigh and Lafayette.
The Bison finished the 2011 season with a 5-10-1 overall record, 3-4-0 in the Patriot League, and they just missed out on the final Patriot League Tournament berth in a race that came down to the final day of the season.
