HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's soccer team dropped its fourth one-goal decision in Patriot League play, falling 2-1 to Colgate at frigid Van Doren Field on Saturday. Andrew Powell (Charlton, Mass./St. John's) scored his first goal of the season for the Bison, who fell to 7-8-2 overall and 2-4-0 in the Patriot League. The Bison saw their postseason hopes take a hit, but they can stay alive in the chase for the final Patriot League Tournament spot with some help from Army and Holy Cross on Sunday.
Colgate took over sole possession of second place in the Patriot League, improving to 10-4-3 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play.
Bucknell outshot the Raiders 15-13, but Colgate put the first two goals of the game on the board. Matt Schuber scored 3:44 before halftime off assists from Steven Miller and Mike Reidy. Miller then scored his eighth goal of the year from a Barrett Metzger corner kick in the 63rd minute.
The Bison got one back in the 77th minute, when Powell came up from his fullback position to jump on a loose ball after a cross from Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School). Burgdorf picked up his team-high sixth assist of the year.
Marc Hartmann (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's), who was coming off a 110-minute shutout of Penn State on Wednesday, made three saves in goal for the Bison. Grant Reed finished with six saves for the Raiders, and Colgate also cleared a ball off the line in the 58th minute.
CK Kumah (Accra, Ghana/Hotchkiss School) led the Bison with four shot attempts, while Powell had three.
Bucknell has six points in the Patriot League standings and is temporarily still just one point behind Navy and Lafayette for the final playoff berth. Navy hosts Holy Cross, while Lafayette travels to Army on Sunday. Army is also on six points while Holy Cross is winless, so the Bison will be rooting for a Holy Cross win or tie and an Army-Lafayette tie. That would keep Bucknell alive heading into next week's regular-season finale at home against Lafayette.
The Bucknell-Lafayette match is slated for 1 p.m. next Saturday at Emmitt Field, and it will be carried live on Bison Vision.
