LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell junior Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) earned Patriot League BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week honors on Monday after helping the Bison to two critical Patriot League wins over the weekend. McDermott made eight saves in a 1-0 shutout of defending league champion Lehigh on Friday night, and then on Sunday she came back with a nine-save performance in a 2-1 overtime victory over first-place Lafayette.
McDermott earned her third career Goalkeeper of the Week award and her first in 2011. She was at her very best in the win over Lehigh, making four diving saves among her eight in the game. She was also aggressive coming off her line to break up a number of other potential scoring chances.
The shutout was her fourth of the season and seventh of her career.
In the Lafayette game, McDermott made eight saves in the first half alone to keep the game close, allowing the Bison to rally for a 2-1 win on Megan DeGennaro's overtime goal.
After stopping 17 of 18 shots on goal last week, McDermott improved her save percentage to .837 and her goals-against average to 1.15. Her 77 total saves are second-most in the Patriot League.
The victories over Lehigh and Lafayette sets up a critical season-ending showdown with Navy this Saturday at Emmitt Field. The Bison (5-9-1, 3-3-0 PL) will qualify for the Patriot League Tournament with a win, but they would be eliminated with a loss or tie. The game begins at noon and will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies.
