LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore fullback Mayowa Alli (Lanham, Md./Bishop McNamara) earned Patriot League BRINE Defensive Player of the Week and Susquehanna Valley Limo Bison Athlete of the Week honors on Monday after yet another big performance in Saturday's 3-0 blanking of Holy Cross at Emmitt Field. Alli scored his league-leading seventh goal of the year in the opening minute of the game, and he was part of a Bucknell back line that was rock solid for 90 minutes.
Alli has been a weapon at both ends of the field this season. He typically comes forward on set pieces to take advantage of his stellar athleticism up in the air. Saturday's goal against Holy Cross came on a corner kick, but this one came with his feet after he poked in a rebound after his first attempt was blocked by a defender. The goal came just 52 seconds into the game, and the Bison would score twice more in the next 14 minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
On defense, Alli and his defensive mates swallowed up any potentially dangerous situations in their own box. Bucknell limited Holy Cross to just one shot on goal and only seven total shots in the contest, and the Bison captured their fifth shutout of the season.
Alli earned his third Patriot League weekly honor of the season, but the first two were Offensive Player of the Week citations. Alli and Steven Miller of Colgate are tied for the Patriot League goal-scoring lead with seven each, and Alli has sole possession of the league lead in the points column with 16.
Bucknell is 7-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the Patriot League. The Bison are in fifth place in the league standings, but they are just one point out of second place.
Bucknell has a non-league match Tuesday night at Adelphi, and then the Bison return to Patriot League play on Saturday at Army at 7 p.m.
