BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell tennis' Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) closed out their tournament campaign on a high note as they both went undefeated at the two-day Lehigh Fall Championships at the Ulrich Sports Complex this weekend. The duo teamed up for a perfect 3-0 mark in doubles while also going 2-0 in singles action. As a team, the Bison went a combined 17-9 in Bethlehem, Pa.
Despite all the victories, Katten and Morque did not have the easiest time of it in doubles. They opened with a pair of 8-6 wins, first over Saint Francis (Pa.) and later against Lehigh. An 8-5 win over Delaware capped off the draw.
Katten faced an equally tough task in singles play, needing a super tiebreak in each of his matches after losing the first sets. The junior bounced back against Delaware's Ryan Kent for a 5-7, 6-1, (10-5) win. After failing to hold serve in the first set against Chris Jimenez of Saint Francis, Katten returned the favor and ultimately walked away 0-6, 6-0, (10-8) to maintain his perfect weekend record.
With his success, Katten moved up several of the program record lists. For the first time in his career, he is now among the top 20 in singles victories with a career record of 38-32, which is good for 19th all-time at Bucknell. At 44-22 in doubles, he is 13th, and with a combined record of 82-54, he moves up to 16th.
Morque's road to being undefeated went a bit more smoothly as both his singles wins came in straight sets. He opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Saint Francis' Juan Andres Pardo before going on to take down Delaware's Evan Andrews 6-3, 7-6.
Morque is now tied for 19th (37-28) in doubles and 30th (64-47) in combined wins at Bucknell.
Also putting together a string of wins were Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./The Hotchkiss School (Conn.)), who were 3-0 in doubles together, and Chris Tortora (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), who finished 2-0 in singles.
Bucknell now has quite a bit of time off. With the fall season officially in the books, the Bison will not return to the courts until Feb. 3, 2012 when they go to Loretto, Pa., for a dual with Saint Francis (Pa.).
