LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis rode a wave of success all the way to the end at the Bison Quad earlier this month, coming away with four titles. The Bison will look to maintain that momentum when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Lehigh Fall Championships this weekend. Play begins at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday and will feature matches with the host Mountain Hawks as well as Delaware, Loyola, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Buffalo.
BISON NOTEBOOK
- Although the finals at the Bison Quad were postponed due to rain, Bucknell did not miss a beat when they made up the championship rounds Oct. 5-6. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) improved to 10-0 in doubles by defeating Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye). Zimmer later topped Cohenca for the Flight A singles title, while Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and Chris Tortora (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) were winners in flights B and C.
- Zimmer's and Rosen's championship wins gave them the first singles titles of their careers. Tortora's was his first finals victory in singles or doubles.
- The Bison now have six total titles as a team. In addition to the Bison Quad success, Cohenca and Zimmer also won doubles and Octavio Canibe (Spring, Texas/The John Cooper School) at the Bucknell Invitational in mid-September.
- Canibe also advanced to the B final of the Bison Quad. The freshman took his first loss of the year 7-6, 6-4 at the hands of teammate Rosen. Canibe is now 9-1 in singles this fall.
- With his .900 winning percentage, Canibe is one of 10 Bison with a winning record in singles. Zimmer (.889) and Tortora (.800) also come in at .800 or better, while the team is winning at a .716 (63-25) clip. At the end of the 2010 fall season, Bucknell had a singles winning percentage of .614 (51-32).
- Cohenca and Zimmer remained undefeated with their latest doubles title. While this fall marks the first time the two have played together, both saw success throughout last season as well. Zimmer is now 13-0 in doubles dating back to last spring when he played at the No. 1 doubles position with Anton Kovic, and Cohenca is 12-0 during that time while playing No. 2 with Mark Malloy. Both teams went without a loss during the Patriot League Tournament to keep their streaks alive.
- Unlike their teammates, Katten and Morque have plenty of experience in doubles together. The duo is 23-10 through almost three years.
- Zimmer success isn't just in doubles. The junior is 13-2 in singles since the start of last April. Both his losses during that stretch came in three sets or a super tiebreak after losing the first set.
LOOKING AHEAD
This weekend marks the end of the tournament schedule for the Bison. They will now take some time off before preparing for their first dual of the year, a Feb. 3, 2012 meeting at Saint Francis (Pa.) in Loretto, Pa.
