Five Bison Score in Bucknell Field Hockey's 7-0 Shutout Over Holy Cross

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) totaled five points on two goals and an assist, and Maggie Murphy (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) tallied her first two career goals to lead Bucknell field hockey to a 7-0 blanking of Holy Cross at Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. Five different Bison scored in the contest that also gave Erica Perrine (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) her first career shutout.
The seven-goal shutout was the largest margin of victory for the Bison (3-6, 1-0 PL) and their first win in regulation this season. Among the career milestones achieved in the outing were the first career scores for Murphy and Gabby Palumbo (Williamstown, N.J./The Peddie School), Perrine's shutout and head coach Jeremy Cook's 33rd win at Bucknell. Cook's victory ties him for third all-time among Bison coaches, equaling Bobbi Testa's mark of 33-11-4 from 1973-77.
Murphy put Bucknell on the board first, getting a tight shot from in close on the goalkeeper Kat Matchett at 19:40 in the first half. Rachel Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) threaded a pass to her freshman teammate through traffic in front of the net, and Murphy snuck it through to give the Bison a 1-0 lead over the Crusaders (1-9, 0-1 PL).
Murphy made a similar play late in the second half when she received a pass from Cassie Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West). Another close shot from on top of the Crusaders' new keeper Kelly Sotsky gave Bucknell a 6-0 lead with just over 14 minutes to play.
In between Murphy's two scores were goals off the sticks of Palumbo, Misko and Smith. Palumbo nabbed a rebound and fired in a second chance shot to put Bucknell in front 2-0. Misko then capped off the first half with a goal on a penalty corner with less than four minutes to go until the break. The sophomore, who nabbed her second goal of the season, fired a one-timer low to the right side to get it past Matchett.
Bucknell took a 3-0 lead into halftime, giving the team an advantage at the break for the first time this season. Of the Bison's nine shots in the first frame, seven of them were on goal. Matchett (1-8) allowed the first three goals and made four saves before being replaced for the final 35 minutes.
The change in keepers didn't do much to slow down Bucknell's offense. Smith tallied back-to-back goals within seven minutes of each other to extend the Bison's lead to 5-0. The senior co-captain's first goal of the day came on a set play from a penalty corner. After inserting the ball, Smith hugged the post and dumped the return pass from Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) into the back of the net.
Siegrist later upped her point total to three as she netted her first goal of the season on another penalty corner. This time, the assists came from Misko and Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) with just 1:25 remaining in the game. The goal was allowed by the Crusaders' third goalkeeper of the day, Nina Batt.
Bucknell totaled 10 penalty corners on the day, compared to just one for Holy Cross. The Bison defense held the Crusaders in check throughout the game, allowing a mere two shots, none of which were on goal and both of which were in the second half.
Perrine (3-3) could not have asked for a simpler shutout as she was not called on to make a save in the game. The only real danger the sophomore faced came with less than 10 minutes to go as Holy Cross drew a penalty corner. Mackenzie Peet got off a shot, but it went wide.
Seven different Bison tallied points in the win, led by Smith with five. Murphy (2g) and Misko (1g, 2a) added four apiece, while Siegrist had three points (1g, 1a). Palumbo (1g) and Richard (2a) each had two points, and Goggin registered one.
The win was Bucknell's third straight over Holy Cross. It was also the second consecutive meeting in which the Bison held the Crusaders without a goal. Bucknell will try to keep its offensive momentum rolling tomorrow when it hosts Villanova in a 1 p.m. matchup at Graham Field. The Bison are looking to snap a two-game losing streak to the Wildcats.
