LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Kelly Pontecorvo and freshmen Katie Hetherington and Lauren Perry were each double winners for the Bison as the Bucknell women's swimming and diving team opened its 2011-12 season with a non-scored dual meet against UMBC Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. Six different Bison combined for nine first-place finishes in the meet's 22 events.
In addition to the two double-winner freshmen, another rookie made her mark in the pool as Stephanie Koziol moved into the program's 400 individual medley top-10 list with a time of 4 minutes, 29.44 seconds, en route to one of her two runner-up finishes in the meet.
Pontecorvo's victories came in the 500 free (5:08.09) and the 1,000 free (10:25.03), while Perry won the 100 free (53.57) and the 200 free (1:55.97). Pontecorvo also finished third in a slower heat of the 200 free, while Perry posted a second-place showing in the 50 free.
Hetherington excelled off both diving boards in her first collegiate meet. She won the one-meter with a score of 264.68, which is the best in program history by more than six points. She scored a 252.53 off the three-meter, which ranks fourth on the all-time list. Another freshman, Tara Boyle, finished second in both disciplines behind Hetherington and she worked her way onto both top-10 lists as well. Boyle scored a 223.80 off the one-meter, good for ninth all-time, while her 236.25 off the three-meter lists her sixth.
Emily Wright (50 free), Marisa Taddeo (50 back) and Kaitlyn Sweeney (100 fly) rounded out the list of Bison winners.
Saturday's season-opening meet featured a different lineup of events than a typical dual meet.
Bucknell will be idle until Oct. 22 when it will host George Washington in a scored meet. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. inside Kinney Natatorium.
