LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior point guard Darryl Shazier (Newport News, Va./Menchville) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday after his stellar performance in a 71-64 road victory over Navy Saturday night in the team's Patriot League opener.
Shazier scored a career-high 28 points in the game, 23 of them coming in the second half after the Bison trailed by one at halftime. He accounted for 11 of Bucknell's 13 points during one late four-minute span in which Bucknell stretched a two-point lead up to seven. And with the outcome still in doubt in the final 21 seconds, on two occasions Shazier made both ends of 1-and-1s to build three-point leads up to five.
Shazier's previous scoring high came in a 27-point night against Holy Cross last season. In addition to his 28 points, he also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
He upped his season scoring average to 9.3 points per game, and Shazier still leads the Patriot League in assists per game at 5.4. He is also ranked No. 2 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.83) with 92 assists and only 24 turnovers.
Last week, Shazier became only the fourth player in program history to record 400 career assists.
Bucknell's victory over Navy was the team's eighth win in its last nine games. Now 10-7 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League, the Bison next head to American on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles and Bison were picked to finish 1-2 in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, and they have the two best overall records in the league entering Wednesday's tilt.
