LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's soccer team kicks off a two-game week on Wednesday at home against Binghamton. The 7 p.m. contest at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium wraps up a three-game homestand, and less than 48 hours later Bucknell will visit Saint Francis (Pa.). Despite a seige of early season injuries, the Bison have played good soccer against a tough schedule but have not often been rewarded for their efforts.
Last Friday Bucknell suffered a 2-1 defeat to Duquesne in the home opener despite outshooting the Dukes 20-9 while creating chance after chance in the second half. And then on Sunday the Bison went toe to toe with 24th-ranked Rutgers at Emmitt Field. Some outstanding work by sophomore keeper Sandita McDermott and the entire defense kept the game scoreless until the 66th minute when the 4-1 Scarlet Knights finally cashed in. Rutgers added two more late goals, the last on a penalty kick with 31 seconds remaining, and prevailed 3-0.
The Bison are now 1-4 on the season, but of the four losses, two have come against Big East opponents and two against Atlantic 10 squads. This week the conferences change to the America East and Northeast Conference, but Bucknell will still have to be at the top of its game. Binghamton was the America East regular season and tournament runner-up a year ago. The Bearcats will travel to Lewisburg with a 1-3 record, consisting of a win over Delaware State (1-0) and losses to Fairfield (2-0), Sacred Heart (3-2) and Delaware (1-0).
Saint Francis is 3-2-1 so far, and one of the victories was a 3-1 decision over the same Duquesne team that just defeated the Bison last week. The Red Flash also have a win over a Patriot League team in Lafayette (1-0) and have also beaten Youngstown State (3-0). Most recently, they played Rider to a scoreless draw on the road, while their losses have come against Canisius (1-0 OT) and Georgetown (5-0).
Dropping consecutive home games is a rarity for Bucknell, which is 31-12-2 all-time on Emmitt Field. There will be plenty more home games to come. After a short trip to Penn State next week, the Bison will play four of their next five on friendly soil, culminating with the Patriot League opener against American on Oct. 2.

Series Notes
Bucknell and Binghamton have met just once previously, that a 3-2 overtime win for the Bearcats in Lewisburg in 2005.
In that game, the Bison held a 2-1 lead, but Katie Kerrigan scored the equalizer in the 81st minute and then tallied the game-winner just 1:30 into overtime. Lexi Shore and Jennifer Margolis scored for the Bison.
Bucknell and Saint Francis have meet every year since 1992, with the exception of 2004, when the teams' scheduled date was cancelled due to heavy rain. Bucknell leads the series 14-2-1. The Bison won the first 10 meetings, then Saint Francis won by identical 1-0 scores in both 2002 and 2003.
Last time in Loretto in 2008, Jennifer Dervarics scored with 4:07 remaining in regulation to lift Bucknell into a 1-1 tie. Kathryn Sutton made five saves for the Bison, who finished with a 17-10 shot advantage. Rachael Siebert scored the Saint Francis goal on a breakaway exactly 60 minutes into the match.
A year ago at Emmitt Field, Bucknell conceded the opening goal to Haleigh Dunyon, but Kayla Yee and Julianne Harris scored their first career goals to give the Bison a 2-1 win. Harris' game-winner came on a header off a corner kick in the 51st minute. Colleen Garrehy was the winning goalkeeper after posting three saves over the final 45 minutes. One of those was a spectaular stop on a breakaway in the 72nd minute to preserve the 2-1 lead.
Bison Notebook
Christa Matlack scored Bucknell's lone goal last week, a rocket from inside the penalty area against Duquesne. That tally tied the match at 1-all after the Dukes scored just 6:46 in on a deflected free kick.
The Bison had many more chances to score in that game, however. They had a 3-on-0 break in the opening minute that was snuffed out by Duquesne keeper Gabby Morrin, who finished with 11 saves. The Bison held an 11-3 shot advantage in the second half but could not get one past Morrin.
Matlack's goal was the 27th of her career, moving her into sole possession of seventh place on Bucknell's career list. Her next tally will tie her for sixth along with Jennifer Margolis, who scored 28 goals from 2003-06.
- Bucknell played Duquesne without the services of senior center backs Amanda Citron and Kelsey Johnson, who sat with nagging injuries. Both were back in the lineup on Sunday against Rutgers, and the Bison turned in a spirited effort against the nation's 24th-ranked team.
The Scarlet Knights scored three times in the last 25 minutes to escape with the victory. Despite allowing the three late goals (the last of which came on a penalty shot), Bison goalkeeper Sandita McDermott was fantastic. She finished with a career-high 13 saves. On the rare occasion when she was caught off her line, defenders Brooke Stokes and Kelsey Johnson made great hustling plays to save goals inches before they crossed the line.
Kelliann Doherty and Tara Cort led the Bison with three shots apiece. Cort had a strong day in the midfield, pleasing the crowd with several nifty moves to split defenders. Doherty took a header that required a diving save with the score still 1-0 in the second half. Early in the game Matlack had a goal waved off because she was offside.
Matlack leads the team with two goals and five points so far. Matlack (15) and Megan DeGennaro (11) rank 1-2 in shot attempts.
About Binghamton
The 1-3 Bearcats earned their virst victory of 2010 at home last Friday against Delaware State. Freshman Kaitlyn Cook scored just 5:17 into the game, and that was the only scratch despite a 22-2 shot advantage for Binghamton.
The Bearcats followed up the win with a 1-0 overtime setback against Delaware at home on Sunday.
Binghamton has been outscored 6-3 in four games so far. Cook has two of the goals and Kerry Sullivan the other. Sarah Furminger has two assists.
Carrie Martin has played every minute in goal so far. She has 19 saves while conceding six.
About Saint Francis
The Red Flash are coming off a scoreless tie with Rider on Sunday. There were no shortage of shot attempts in that game, however, as Rider finished with a 24-23 edge in the shots column. Saint Francis keeper Lauren Fearer was credited with 10 saves.
Haleigh Dunyon, who scored against Bucknell last season, had the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Lafayette.
Dunyon and Tesa McKibbon are tied for the team lead with three goals apiece.
Barbara Maros de Carvalho, a freshman from Brazil who also has a twin sister on the team, has a team-high five assists so far, all coming in the first two games of the season.
Saint Francis has used two goalkeepers this season. Brianna Butcher has started four games and has 17 saves with seven goals against. Lauren Fearer has played in two games and has yet to allow a goal while making 14 stops.
Looking Ahead
After the Binghamton and Saint Francis games this week, the Bison will travel to Penn State on Wednesday, Sept. 15. For the first time in program history Bucknell secured a point against the Nittany Lions last season when the two teams played to a 0-0 tie at Emmitt Field.
