ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) netted three goals for the second consecutive game and four other Bison found the back of the net two times apiece as the No. 18 Bucknell men's water polo team defeated Fordham, 16-13, to close out the season-opening Navy Open Sunday with a 3-1 record. Barron, whose twin brother is a sophomore driver on the Rams, also tallied three goals in the first game of the day, a 15-14 loss to Queens.
Bucknell, which averaged just over 10 goals per game a year ago (313 goals in 31 games), is now averaging 17.5 goals per contest this year (70 goals in four games). The Bison registered at least 14 scores in each of the weekend's four contests.
Against Fordham, Bucknell piled up eight goals in a high-scoring third quarter that featured a combined 13 goals. The two teams played even other than that quarter, which the Bison “won” by an 8-5 margin, with a buzzer-beating goal by Uros Markovic (Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) rounding out the scoring. It followed a second quarter that featured just two goals.
Beau Caillouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School), Julian Colina (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) joined Barron with multiple-goal outings opposite Fordham, which fell to 2-34 all-time against the Bison. A total of 10 Bucknell players scored goals in the contest.
Kalter was the Bison's top point scorer as he dished out a team-high three assists, giving him five points. He now has a team-high nine assists this year, more than one-third of the way to his 2009 total. Hyden's two goals vaulted his team-leading total to 13. He is now just seven goals shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to reach the 200-goal plateau in a career. He posted five goals and a pair of assists earlier in the day against Queens.
As a team, Bucknell drew a season-high 12 ejections, including three apiece by Hyden and freshman Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep). Reitz also recorded a steal, won a sprint, scored a goal and dished out an assist off the bench.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) posted six saves in the cage, bringing his season and weekend total to 31, just four shy of his 2009 final mark.
The Bison will be back in action next weekend with the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium. They will play a total of five games, including one exhibition contest, next weekend. The three-day event starts Friday evening with a 6 p.m. Bucknell-Toronto matchup.
