LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell scored six straight goals in the first half and seven straight at one point in the second half as it defeated Toronto 15-4 Friday evening at Kinney Natatorium to open the three-day Bison Invitational. Beau Caillouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) led Bucknell with four goals on four shots.
The Bison, who improved to 4-1 on the young season, dominated the game throughout, using their speed up and down the pool, as well as their depth, to their advantage. Third-year head coach John Abdou played his entire roster of 20 players, while the Varsity Blues had just two substitutes sitting on the bench.
In addition to being much faster than Toronto, Bucknell was able to push the Varsity Blues toward mid-pool and yielded just 13 shots the entire game. Often, Toronto was starting its offense more than 20 seconds into the 35-second shot clock. By comparison, the Bison attempted 33 shots, many from point-blank range.
A total of 10 different Bucknell players netted goals in the contest, led by Caillouette's career-high tally. Senior co-captain Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and sophomore Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) each added two goals to round out the Bison with multi-goal showings.
Bucknell's defense was strong throughout, holding Toronto scoreless for more than 12 consecutive minutes in the first half and more than 11 in the second. The Bison totaled 16 steals in the contest and were not whistled for their first ejection until the third quarter. Overall, Bucknell gave the Varsity Blues just three six-on-five opportunities.
Despite facing just 13 shots, Bison goalies Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) had strong showings. Gilhuly registered four saves in 16 minutes of play, while Napleton, who was making his season debut, stopped a pair of shots and piled up a team-high four steals while playing the second half.
Bucknell was awarded four penalty shots in the contest and converted two of them, both in the first half. Toronto (0-1) was 1-for-1 on penalty shots, converting one just over two minutes into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead, its only one of the game.
A solid crowd was in attendance at Kinney Natatorium, including members of the Bison women's water polo team as well as the swimming team. A number of the swimmers in attendance were rooting for freshman Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who is a member of both the Bucknell water polo and swimming squads. He finished the contest with two steals, one ejection drawn and a pair of sprints won. A total of eight freshmen saw playing time on Friday.
The Bison will continue play at their own invitational with three games on Saturday (9:45 a.m. vs. Penn State Behrend; 12:15 p.m. vs. Diablo Valley; 7:30 p.m. vs. Brown). The middle contest vs. Diablo Valley is an exhibition game. The Bison Invitational will run from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A total of 18 games will be contested at Kinney Natatorium this weekend.
