LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team came into Saturday night's clash with Brown riding a potent offense that had averaged over 18 goals per game. But at jam-packed Kinney Natatorium, it was the defense that set the tone in a 13-9 victory over the previously unbeaten Bears. The Bison kept Brown off the scoreboard until midway through the second quarter while opening up a commanding 5-0 lead, and they did not allow an even-strength goal until 2:52 remained in the game.
Now 6-1 on the season, Bucknell received three goals and an assist from Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and two goals apiece from Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich), Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Andover) and Daniel Schwartz (Miami Beach, Fla./Ransom Everglades). Goalkeeper Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) had a strong game with nine saves.
The Bison got on the board first with 4:14 left in the first quarter after Kalter fed Schwartz on the right side. Reamey then scored twice in a row, the last with two seconds left in the period, to give Bucknell a 3-0 lead after one. Goals by Schwartz and Mike Kimble made it 5-0 before Brown (4-1) finally got on the board on a 6-on-5 goal by Corey Schwartz.
That was the first of three straight for the Bears, but the Bison answered with a 3-0 run of their own to restore the five-goal margin. Kalter scored off a Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) feed with three seconds left to give Bucknell a 6-3 lead at the half, then Kalter scored again 27 seconds into the third quarter. Hyden made it an 8-3 game midway through the third, and the Bison led by at least three goals the rest of the way.
Gordon Hood led Brown with four goals, all of them coming on five-meter penalty shots. Bucknell outshot Brown 28-27 in the contest.
Earlier in the day, Bucknell crushed Penn State-Behrend 26-3 and cruised past Diablo Valley 15-9.
Bucknell has one more contest remaining in the Bison Invitational, an 11 a.m. match Sunday against Eastern power St. Francis (N.Y.).
