LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team was averaging nearly 18 goals per game over its first seven contests of the 2010 season. That number dropped on Sunday as the No. 20 Bison lost a 9-5 decision to No. 16 St. Francis (N.Y.) at Kinney Natatorium to conclude the Bison Invitational.
Bucknell (6-2) had won four games in a row and had tallied double figures in each of its first seven outings, but it managed just two second-half goals as the Terriers (6-0) outscored the Bison 6-2 after halftime.
Bucknell went up 1-0 on an early goal by Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover), but St. Francis evened the score in the final minutes of the first quarter. The score remained tied (3-3) at halftime as Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) scored a six-on-five goal with 42 seconds remaining in the second stanza. However, the Terriers netted two goals in the first 95 seconds of the second half and the Bison never drew closer than one score the rest of the way.
Kalter, who now has a team-high 26 points this season, tallied two goals and an assist to lead the offense. Coghlan, Beau Calliouette (Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) and Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) added single goals.
Four of Bucknell's five goals came in six-on-five situations as the Bison were 4-for-10 on the day. The Terriers, on the other hand, were just 2-for-10.
As was the case most of the weekend, Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) split time in goal. Both made five saves, with Gilhuly playing the first half and Napleton seeing time in the second half.
Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) drew a team-high four ejections, bringing his career total to 143, tying him with Brad Roslyn for second on the Bucknell all-time list behind Gabriel Heiber.
The Bison will be back in action next weekend at the ECAC Championship at Harvad. They are the No. 1 seed and will face the winner of Friday night's Iona-George Washington game on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
