BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 20 Bucknell men's water polo team advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Championship with a 21-3 victory over George Washington Saturday morning, but the Bison lost an 11-7 decision to Brown in the evening semifinal matchup. Bucknell (7-3) will now faced the loser of Saturday evening's St. Francis (N.Y.)-Princeton game for third place on Sunday at 2:20 p.m.
Bucknell is the top seed in the 12-team field, while Brown was the fifth seed and will be playing in Sunday's championship tilt against the winner of that St. Francis (N.Y.)-Princeton matchup.
The Bison jumped out to a 10-2 halftime lead against George Washington and coasted to the easy victory with their third 20-goal outing of the young season. The Brown contest was much closer as Bucknell trailed by just one goal (8-7) after three quarters. However, the Bears, who lost 13-9 to the Bison last Saturday at Kinney Natatorium, outscored Bucknell 3-0 in the final eight minutes of play for the four-goal victory.
Highlighting the day for the Bison were four different players tallying four goals in a game. Jack Else (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich Conn.)) and Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) each found the back of the net four times in the opener against the Colonials, while Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) tallied more than half of the scores in the nightcap loss. Hyden's six goals on the day were the most by any Bucknell player and it pushed his career total over the 200 plateau (202).
As has been the case much of the year, goalies Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) split time in goal. Both made five saves on the day. Gilhuly started both contests, while Napleton appeared in the second half.
Bucknell will wrap up the weekend of play on Sunday as it goes for its third third-place showing in the last four years at the ECAC Championship.
