BOSTON, Mass. – The top two seeds in the ECAC Men's Water Polo Championship met in the third-place game on Sunday at Harvard's Blodgett Pool and the second-seeded Princeton squad came away with a 9-6 victory over top-seeded Bucknell. The Bison were going for their third top-three finish at the event in the last four years, but had to settle for their seventh consecutive top-five showing.
Princeton (5-2), which is ranked 17th nationally, broke open a one-goal halftime lead (4-3) with a four-goal third quarter. The Bison (7-4), ranked No. 20 in the nation, managed three scores total after halftime.
Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) led the Bucknell offense with two goals and an assist, while Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) and Trevor Reitz (Boynton Beach, Fla./Gulliver Prep) each tallied one goal and an assist.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) got the start in goal and played the first half, recording five saves. Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) played the second half and totaled three stops.
Bucknell has now faced two ranked opponents this year and lost both contests by similar scores. The Bison lost to then-No. 16 St. Francis (N.Y.) by a 9-5 margin at last weekend's Bison Invitational. The third-seeded Terriers were in Sunday afternoon's championship game against fifth-seeded Brown.
Bucknell will open league play next weekend with road contests at Johns Hopkins (Friday), George Washington (Saturday) and Navy (Saturday).
