BALTIMORE, Md. – Johns Hopkins' Ross Schofield scored with two seconds remaining on the clock to lift the Blue Jays to a 13-12 victory over Bucknell in men's water polo action on Friday night. Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) led the Bison with a career-high six goals, but he was one of three Bucknell seniors eliminated from the game in the fourth quarter with three ejections.
Hyden, who also dished out three assists to help him equal his career high of nine points, scored half of Bucknell's (7-5, 0-1 CWPA) 12 goals and recorded all three assists for the team. His previous high for goals in a game was five, while the only other time he reached nine points in a contest was in 2008 against Fordham.
The Bison were plagued by foul trouble as Hyden, Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) each picked up his third ejection in the fourth quarter. Overall, Johns Hopkins (7-5, 1-0 CWPA) drew 13 ejections, while Bucknell drew nine.
The second quarter was the key frame in the contest as the Blue Jays erased a one-goal first-quarter deficit with a 5-1 advantage, putting the Bison at an 8-5 deficit heading into halftime.
Spencer Richley (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor), Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) and Paul Reamey (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) helped shoulder the offensive load with Hyden as each netted a pair of goals.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) split time in goal and each recorded seven saves and a steal. The 14 total stops in the contest marked a season high for Bison netminders.
With his strong offensive output on Friday, Hyden now has a team-high 29 goals and 12 assists for a team-high 41 points this season. He moved into a tie for eighth place on Bucknell's career goals list (209) and into sole possession of eighth place on the assists list (136).
Bucknell will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday when it faces fellow CWPA Southern Division foes Navy (12 p.m.) and George Washington (5:30 p.m.).
