ANNAPOLIS, Md./WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bucknell men's water polo's first weekend of league play did not go as hoped as the Bison lost a pair of road games to No. 18 Navy (L, 10-9) and George Washington (L, 10-7) on Saturday. Bucknell, which lost to Johns Hopkins on Friday night, finished the weekend with an 0-3 mark and is now 7-7 on the year.
Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) was Bucknell's most productive offensive player as he totaled seven points in the two games. He scored a team-high three goals and dished out two assists against Navy, while he added two more assists opposite George Washington. Thanks to the seven points, Hyden moved past Scott Mutschler and into eighth place on the program's career points list with 352.
Against nationally ranked Navy (14-4, 1-0 CWPA Southern Division), the Bison faced an 8-3 halftime deficit, but were able to come back as they outscored the Mids 3-1 in both the third and fourth quarters. Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) and Brian Barron (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) scored two goals apiece, giving Bucknell three players with multi-goal outings.
It was the opposite against George Washington (5-8, 1-0 CWPA Southern Division) as the two teams were tied at halftime and following three quarters, but the Colonials won the fourth quarter 3-0 to break open a 7-7 game. Paul Reamey's (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) two goals led the offense.
Twelve of Bucknell's 16 goals on the day came in the middle four quarters as it tallied six goals in the second half against Navy and six in the first half of the nightcap at George Washington, a team the Bison defeated 21-3 last Saturday.
Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) started both games in goal and posted six saves against 14 goals allowed. Matt Napleton (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) recorded eight saves and yielded just six second-half scores.
Bucknell will be idle next weekend. The Bison will return to action Saturday, Oct. 9, with a 2 p.m. contest at Princeton.
