ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's water polo team opened its 2010 campaign with plenty of offense on Saturday at the Navy Open. The Bison commenced the day with an 18-6 victory over Vanguard and then followed that with a 22-3 triumph against Gannon. A total of thirteen different players netted goals for Bucknell on the day, led by six apiece by Spencer Richley and Richie Hyden.
Hyden, who posted two goals against Vanguard and four more in the nightcap, increased his career total to 186, moving him into 10th place in program history. He is the first person in a decade to join that list.
Bucknell (2-0) used strong first halves to jump out to commanding early leads in both games. The Bison led Vanguard 11-4 at the half and held an 11-2 edge after 16 minutes of play opposite Gannon.
In addition to the strong offensive output, Bucknell's defense was exceptionally strong as well, totaling 42 steals in the doubleheader. Freshman Trevor Reitz collected a team-high six steals on the day, including five against Gannon.
Against Vanguard, six different Bison tallied multiple goals, led by Richley's three. Jack Else, Beau Caillouette, Hyden, Howie Kalter and Paul Reamey each found the back of the net twice.
In the Gannon contest seven players registered multiple-goal outings. Hyden led the way with four, while Alex Nowlin, Richley and Reamey scored three times apiece. Else, Caillouette and Nick Barnett each posted a pair of goals.
Miles Gilhuly played all 64 minutes in the two games in goal and registered 17 saves, including 10 in the opener against Vanguard.
The Bison will wrap up play at the Navy Open Sunday with games against Queens (9:15 a.m.) and Fordham (3:30 p.m.).
