LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished second to Navy at the 2010 Patriot League Championships. Both Bison squads are expected to finish in the same positions in 2011, according to the Patriot League Preseason Polls, which were released Wednesday. Navy's men and women were both unanimous choices for the top spot.
Bucknell's women totaled 83 points and a pair of first-place votes in the preseason poll. Colgate was just two points behind with 79, while Navy led the way with 98 points and 14 first-place votes.
The Bison women beat out two-time defending champion Colgate at last year's Patriot League championship meet in Annapolis, Md. Bucknell, which posted a 7-3 overall record and a 4-2 mark against Patriot League opposition in dual-meet competition, placed 10 student-athletes on the All-Patriot League teams. Courtney Warren, a four-time All-Patriot League selection, claimed the Bison's only individual title, winning the 100-yard backstroke for the second time in three years.
In 2010-11, Bucknell returns five All-Patriot League selections and 20 letterwinners overall. Senior co-captains Molly Goebel and Macey Keath, who were both First Team All-Patriot League choices last year, headline the list of returners. Senior Laura Twichell will share captain duties with Goebel and Keath.
The Bison men matched the women with 83 points, but earned just one first-place vote. Navy, which totaled 98 points and 14 first-place votes, is predicted to win the title for an eighth consecutive year. Army claimed the remaining first-place vote and is expected to finish third. The Black Knights totaled 76 points in the voting.
Led by 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year Dan Schinnerer, Bucknell finished second at last year's Patriot League Championships, its third consecutive year in that position. The Bison, who were 4-5 overall and 3-3 against Patriot League foes during the dual-meet portion of the schedule, had eight top-five finishes on the final day of the three-day meet. A total of 10 men earned spots on the All-Patriot League Teams, including first-team selections Daniel Fletcher and Eric Sokolosky.
Eight of Bucknell's 10 All-League selections are schedule to return in 2010-11, including Sokolosky. Overall, the Bison bring back 18 letterwinners, including team captain Michael Volpe.
The Patriot League Preseason Poll is determined by a vote from the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Voters are not allowed to vote for their own team.
Both Bucknell squads will get the 2010-11 campaign underway next Friday, Oct. 8, with a 6 p.m. meet at UMBC.
