POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Rycke Guiney scored on a free kick just 4:28 before halftime to lift Marist to a 1-0 win over Bucknell in a non-league women's lacrosse game Friday night at warm Tenney Stadium. The Bison had some good early scoring chances in the contest but could not find the net for the third straight game.
Bucknell came out firing, with Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./Shipley School) forcing Jamie Balzarini to make a save just 2:20 into the game, and not long after Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) launched a shot wide of the frame. In the 17th minute Megan DeGennaro (Westlake Village, Calif./La Reina) took a direct kick from 25 yards out that required a diving stop by Balzarini.
Bison keeper Sandita McDermott (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Red Hook) made three of her nine saves in an eight-minute span to keep the game scoreless, then in the 30th minute Liz Dwornik (Endwell, N.Y./Union Endicott) hit the post.
Marist finally cashed in at the 40:32 mark when Guiney scored her first of the year on a direct kick, and that would hold up as the game-winner as the Red Foxes (4-5) limited the Bison to only four second-half shots.
McDermott kept it a one-goal game with a finger-tip save on Jackie Frey's breakaway in the 75th minute, but the Bison did not get a shot off over the final 15 minutes.
Bucknell did receive some good news in that co-captain Amanda Citron (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) was able to return to the lineup for the first time since Sept. 5 due to an injury. Citron played the first half at center back. After the game coach Ben Landis gave kudos to his entire back line of Citron, Kelsey Johnson (Monroe, Conn./Masuk), Casey Crowley (Hamilton Square, N.Y./Peddie School), Corinne Collins (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Julianne Harris (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler).
Marist finished with a 19-9 shot advantage and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Bucknell (1-10) will look to snap its nine-game losing streak at home on Sunday against Iona at 4 p.m.
