Vidrascu, Two Doubles Teams Advance to Finals of Bucknell Women's Tennis Invite

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis continued its strong showing at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday, sending two doubles teams as well as Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) to tomorrow's final rounds. Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) will play for the title in Flight A Doubles, while Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) will do the same in Flight B. Vidrascu will player for the first title of her career in Flight C Singles.
Lucido and Tuzhikova claimed a win in their semifinal match, defeating Ana Mungo and Tara Madjalani of Duquesne, 8-6. Dwojewski and Rottkamp needed two wins to earn their spot in Sunday's final. The duo started with a smooth 8-1 victory over Villanova's Amanda Nelson and Kate Monari. Their second match proved a bit more difficult, but Dwojewski and Rottkamp came away with an 8-6 win over Hofstra's Laura Newman and Sonia Tsay. Both Bucknell teams will take on opponents from Hofstra tomorrow.
Vidrascu continued the strong start to her career in singles. After an easy straight sets win over Hofstra's Paige Polizois, the Bison freshman went the distance with Megan O'Sullivan of Duquesne. Vidrascu won the first set 7-5 but fell in the second, 6-3. A super tiebreak went in Vidrascu's favor, 11-9. Vidrascu will face Duquesne's Maddi Bittner when play resumes tomorrow.
Also earning wins in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw were Lucido, Tuzhikova, Dwojewski and Elizabeth Morgan (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School). The four Bison were unable to pull out wins in their semifinal matches, however.
The Bucknell Invitational will conclude tomorrow at the Varsity Tennis Courts with play beginning at 9 a.m. In addition to those competing in the main draw, Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends Academy), Rottkamp, Jennie Ciotti (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) will try to end their tournament with wins in the singles back draw.
