Bison Women's Tennis Ends Bucknell Invite with Two Titles

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell tennis' Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Sutherland) earned her first career title, winning the Flight C Singles draw at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Also earning victories in their final match of the three-day tournament at the Varsity Tennis Courts were Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends Academy) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation), who ended up as the last players standing in their respective singles back draws.
Vidrascu defeated Duquesne's Maddie Bittner in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 as play got underway on Sunday morning. With the final win, Vidrascu ends her debut weekend with a 4-0 singles record.
Iepuras faced a tougher challenge in the Flight A Singles back draw. Iepuras won the opening set against Hofstra's Lauren Clifton 6-4 but had difficulty holding her serve in the second set. Clifton took advantage and evened the match at a set apiece with a 7-5 decision. Clifton had Iepuras on the ropes briefly in the super tiebreak, but the Bison junior came from behind after some long rallies for an 11-9 win.
Casey's victory in the Flight C Singles back draw came at the expense of teammate Jennie Ciotti (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga). The elder Bison defeated Ciotti, 6-4, 6-3.
Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) also won their Flight B Doubles final by default.
Bucknell will be back in action next weekend when it takes the trip to West Point, N.Y., for the Eastern Championships. The tournament, hosted by Army, runs Friday-Sunday, Sept. 24-26.
