PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bucknell men's tennis' Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) each won their singles matches at the Northeast Intercollegiate in Providence, R.I., on Saturday, advancing to the championship round in their respective draws on Sunday. The trio led the Bison on the second day of the fall tournament, as the team finished with a total of nine wins on the day.
Morque was one of several Bison to go the distance in his match. After a relatively easy outing on Friday night, Morque needed a super tiebreak to knock out Villanova's Mathew Colonnese. Morque fell in a first-set tiebreak 7-6 (4) before taking the final two sets, 6-2 and 7-5 for the win. The sophomore will take on Nolan Gelman of Bryant for the Indigo Draw title tomorrow.
Bernstein and Malloy wrapped up their matches in two sets, but the opener for each nearly pushed them to their limit. Bernstein battled to a 7-5 score over Bryant's CJ Corrigan in the first set before sailing to a 6-1 win in the second. He will take on Marist's Jacob Solley in the Black Draw title match tomorrow.
Malloy needed a tiebreak in his first set against Archer McFall of Colgate. The Bison senior won 7-6 (4) before going on for a 6-4 victory in the second set. Malloy will face Marist's Bradley Royes in the Grey Draw's final match.
The majority of doubles competition was concluded on Saturday with two Bison teams playing for some of the first championships of the tournament. Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./ West Essex) defeated the team from Marist 8-3 in the semifinals, but fell to their opponents from Brown in the final contest, 8-4.
Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and Bernstein suffered a similar fate winning their semifinal match (8-5 vs. Marist) but dropping an 8-1 decision to Brown in the finals.
The Northeast Intercollegiate continues tomorrow. Morque, Bernstein and Malloy will not be the only Bison in action on the final day of play. Six more Bucknellians will continue through the singles back draws in addition to the doubles team of Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Greg Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss), which will play in the back draw of the Triangle Draw.
