CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Bucknell men's soccer team's trip to South Carolina got off to a rough start Friday night as the Bison suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of host College of Charleston at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic. Bucknell fell to 2-3 on the season while being kept off the scoreboard for only the third time in its last 62 games.
College of Charleston (2-2-1) took control with a pair of first-half goals. Sean DeSilva opened the scoring in the 20th minute, and Tony Kattreh made it 2-0 with a tally just 1:26 before the halftime whistle.
Bucknell nearly cut the deficit in half with about 35 minutes left when Josh Butzke (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) was robbed by a terrific save from Cougars keeper Kees Heemskerk. Not long after, College of Charleston countered with a Francis Twohig tough-angle goal to make it 3-0. Twohig struck again in the 74th minute to cap the scoring.
Bucknell's other good scoring opportunity came from Brendan Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J./Pingry School), who slammed a shot off the crossbar with 15 minutes to play. Burgdorf, Bucknell's top scorer with four goals, led the team with six shot attempts, three of which were on frame.
College of Charleston finished with a 17-14 shot advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Bison will remain in Charleston for a Sunday game against Furman. The Paladins lost 1-0 to Lehigh earlier in the evening on Friday.
