Bucknell Men's Tennis Opens with 10 Wins at Northeast Intercollegiate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bucknell men's tennis opened its 2010-11 season at the Northeast Intercollegiate in Providence, R.I., on Friday and claimed a total of 10 victories on the first day of play. Among the Bison winning both their singles and doubles matches were Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex), Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Chris Tortora (West Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), Scott Bernstein (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School).
Morque and Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) got things started in doubles with an 8-5 win over the team from Hofstra. The freshman duo of Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) and Bernstein won by the same score over their Villanova opponents. Also earning doubles wins were Zimmer and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK), 8-3 over another Villanova tandem. Tortora and Malloy had a tougher time in their doubles win, but pulled out the 9-7 decision over Bryant.
Each of Bucknell's singles matches were decided in straight sets, and all but one set was won convincingly. Tortora faced a challenge in his debut against Josh Jordan of Brandeis but was able to earn a win in the tiebreaker. He ultimately took the match 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Zimmer defeated Brandeis' Adam Brown, 6-1, 6-1, and Morque had a similarly easy time of NJIT's Martin Cederqvist, winning 6-2, 6-4. Malloy won his first match in more than a year, defeating Angelita Mamutuk of NJIT, 6-3, 6-1. Bernstein and Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) also claimed singles victories for the Bison.
Bucknell will try to keep its success going through the remainder of the draw tomorrow and Sunday as play continues at the Northeast Intercollegiate.
