LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell freshman defensive back Derrick Palmer (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Saturday after his nine-tackle performance against Marist. He is the third Bison to be honored by the Patriot League this year, following Tyler Smith (Special Teams) and Brandon Wesley (Rookie) last week.
Palmer registered nine tackles, including four solo stops, in the 14-3 loss to the Red Foxes. The nine tackles ranked him second on the team. Six of the stops came in the second half as he filled in for an injured Ahkiel White.
Palmer is the third straight Bucknell player to be named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Smith, a current sophomore, claimed the award the final week of the 2009 season, and Wesley, who made his first career start on Saturday, was honored last week.
Junior defensive lineman Josh Eden (State College, Pa./State College) also picked up a weekly honor on Monday as he was named an Honorable Mention Defensive Line Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. Eden recorded two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against Marist. It was the most tackles for loss by a Bison player since Sean Conover posted four in a 2005 loss to Villanova.
Bucknell (0-2) will play its home opener this Saturday, Sept. 18, against Dartmouth. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The first 600 fans receive a poster commemorating the 125th season of Bucknell football.
