HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Junior Will Bachman (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) fired a 6-under-par 66, tying the Bucknell record for score in relation to par, but it was a tough day for the rest of the squad and the Bison finished in a tie for fourth place at the Colgate Invitational. On a day when no team scored better than 304, Bucknell closed with a 314 for a 36-hole total of 616, 10 back of Colgate's winning score.
Only one player in the entire field broke par on Sunday, and that was Bachman, who obliterated the damp Seven Oaks course with eight birdies and just two bogeys. He shot 3-under 33 on both sides en route to his third career sub-par round. His previous low score was a 69 at the 2009 Patriot League Championship.
The only other Bucknell player to finish a round six strokes under par was Andrew Cohen at last spring's Lafayette Invitational. The 66 is the second-lowest gross score in Bucknell history, just behind the 65 shot by Ben Pellicani at the 2005 Patriot League Championship at the Bucknell Golf Club. But Pellicani's score and the three other 66s in program history all came on par-70 courses, so Cohen and Bachman are the only Bison to complete a round at 6-under.
Unfortunately for the Bison, none of the other four players in the lineup managed to break 80 in the final round. Ben Mattingly (Fishers, Ind./Park Tudor), who shot a 2-over 74 in the first round on Saturday, carded an 80 on Sunday. Andrew Wallisch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) posted an 83, while J.J. Szmadzinski (Northville, Mich./Detroit Central Catholic) and Dan Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) both shot 85.
Despite shooting 320 on Sunday after a first-round 286, Colgate won its own tournament for the second straight year, finishing at 606 total. Laval was second at 610, followed by Fordham (615), Bucknell (616), Daemen (616), Niagara (626), Ottawa (627), Le Moyne (644) and Roberts Wesleyan (652).
Will Delano of Colgate and Kyle Kapturowski of Daemen tied for the individual lead at 1-under 143, and Delano won the title on the first playoff hole. Bachman moved from T-32nd all the way up to sole possession of fourth place at 147. Mattingly just missed a top-10 finish, placing T-11th.
The Bison are back in action next Friday and Saturday when they host their annual Bucknell Invitational at the Bucknell Golf Course.
