LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's golf team completed a milestone weekend on Sunday, posting a school-record score of 296 to win the Bucknell Invitational by 19 shots over defending champion William & Mary. Individually, the day belonged to senior Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland), who shot an even-par 70 to tie the school record and then beat Rutgers' Jeanne Waters in a four-hole playoff to win her first career individual title.
For Bucknell, the team victory was the program's second ever and first since winning the Bucknell Invitational in the fall of 2006. Jurenovich joined Jess Hetrich and Teri Schlang as Bison individual winners.
The Bison entered the day with a five-shot lead over William & Mary, which won this tournament by 36 strokes last season, after shooting 303-304 on Saturday. In cool, misty conditions on Sunday, Bucknell posted its first-ever sub-300 round to conclude the first tournament of the team's 13th varsity season. The Tribe shot 310 in the final round, leaving them in second place, 19 shots behind Bucknell.
The round of 296, which bettered the school 18-hole record by seven shots, was part of a 54-hole composite of 903. That is also a program record by a whopping 40 strokes. The previous 54-hole mark was a 943 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Oklahoma in the spring of 2008.
William & Mary finished at 922, followed by Rutgers (929), Lehigh (931) and Marshall (938) in the 18-team field. Bucknell's Big South rival Radford finished sixth at 945.
Jurenovich tied her teammate, Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), for low round in program history with her 70. Lee shot a 2-under 70 at last year's Big South Championship. Jurenovich had posted 73-78 on Saturday and trailed Lee by four shots on the individual leaderboard entering the final round. Lee, who opened with rounds of 76-71, finished with a 75 for a 54-hole total of 222 and missed out on the playoff by just one shot.
Rutgers' Waters finished with a 72 to tie Jurenovich at 221, forcing a four-hole playoff. Both players made par on the first hole and bogey on the difficult par-3 second. On the long par-5 third hole, Jurenovich made a great up-and-down for par, while Waters settled for an eight after a wayward drive. Jurenovich then closed out her first win with a nice lag putt on the par-3 fourth hole.
While Jurenovich and Lee have been longtime stalwarts for the Bison, they were well-supported all weekend by a trio of promising freshmen, each of whom played very well in their collegiate debuts. Lauren Bernard (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) was the Saturday star with rounds of 75 and 73, but she struggled on Sunday with an 85 and finished in a tie for 15th place at 233. Kasha Scott (Cherry Hills Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) also recorded a 233 after firing a 2-over 72 on Sunday. That tied the Bucknell freshman record, set by Lee at the Rutgers Invitational in October 2008. Bridget Wilcox (Bernardsville, N.J./Taft School) closed with a 79 for a 54-hole total of 241.
Bucknell also entered a four-player "Blue" team this weekend, and that squad finished in 14th place with scores of 340-332-337. Juniors Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) and Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) shot 78 and 79 on Sunday, while sophomore Alana Friedlander (Weston, Conn./Hopkins School) closed with an 82.
Bucknell will be back in action Sept. 25 and 26 at the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin.
