The 2009-10 academic year recently concluded and Bucknell earned its 16th Patriot League Presidents' Cup in the last 20 years, had nine squads win league titles, was again among the nation's leaders in graduation rates and had 17 Academic All-District selections and one Academic All-American (Patrick Selwood). Even with all that success, some stories stood out more than others. Below are the 15 most popular releases and recaps that appeared on BucknellBison.com in 2009-10.
Joe Susan Named Head Football Coach at Bucknell
Following a comprehensive national search, Joe Susan, a veteran of more than 30 years in the college coaching profession, has been named the Bob Odell Head Football Coach at Bucknell University, it was announced by Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt. (Jan. 27, 2010)
Bucknell Basketball Postcards from Italy
The Bison men's basketball team has arrived in Rome for the start of its 10-day tour of Italy. The team is playing four games here, beginning tomorrow night against Virtus Aprilia Basket. While those four games represent the basketball portion of the trip, most of the Bucknell players got in an unexpected workout this morning in the form of a long wind sprint through the Frankfurt airport. Bucknell Baseball Sweeps Holy Cross for Record-Tying Fifth Patriot League Title!
Late-inning heroics by Bob Donato and Doug Shribman propelled the Bucknell baseball team to a sweep of Holy Cross to claim its fifth Patriot League title, and second in three years. The Bison won game one 4-3 on an eighth-inning, run-scoring double by Donato, while Shribman's three-run home run in the seventh inning of game two gave Bucknell a 9-7 advantage en route to a 12-7 victory. Bucknell Men's Soccer Wins First-Round NCAA Tournament Game, 1-0 Over Princeton!
The 1-0 theme continued in the NCAA Tournament for the Bucknell men's soccer team, as freshman Brendan Burgdorf scored the game's only goal in the 70th minute and the Bison advanced to the second round for the second time in the last four years by defeating Princeton at rain-soaked Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. Champions at Last: Bucknell Men's Track & Field Captures Patriot League Title!
On what Bucknell coach Kevin Donner called the best day of his coaching career, senior Kyle Anthony, sophomores Robert Arent and Andrew Powell, and a host of other heroes helped the Bison men's track and field team finish its climb back to the top of the Patriot League mountain. Competing on their home track under warm, sunny skies, the Bison men edged Army by a mere three points to claim their first outdoor title since 1991. (May 1, 2010)
Bucknell Football Upsets PL Champion Holy Cross 23-17 in Season Finale
C.J. Hopson rushed a career-high 29 times for a career-high 189 yards and Bucknell dominated the time of possession as the Bison football team defeated Patriot League champion No. 13 Holy Cross 23-17 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Bucknell, which won its final contest of the season for the sixth time in the last seven years. (Nov. 21, 2009)
Eight Patriot League Championships Lift Bucknell to 16th Presidents' Cup Title
Propelled by a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 2009-10, Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents' Cup for the 16th time in the conference's 20-year history. Bucknell earned the league's all-sports title for the fifth straight year and for the 12th time in the last 13 years. The Bison also swept the overall, Men's and Women's Cups for the sixth time. Bucknell won the Women's Cup for the 13th straight year and 16th time overall, while it earned the Men's Cup for the seventh time. (May 24, 2010)
Bucknell Softball Wins Patriot League Championship with Pair of Comeback Victories Against Colgate
Sherry Finkel hit a game-winning home run in the ninth inning of the day's opener to keep Bucknell softball alive in the Patriot League Championships, and Mary Pavlovich drilled a two-RBI single for the game-two win as the Bison won their second championship title in program history. Bucknell won game one 4-3 in nine innings before defeating Colgate for the second time 6-4 in game two. Finkel, Jane Messersmith and Lauren Fry were each named to the All-Tournament Team, while Alex MacLean was selected as the Patriot League Tournament MVP. (May 15, 2010)
Bucknell Women's Track & Field Takes Triple Crown with Second Straight Patriot League Outdoor Title!
Bucknell women's track and field won the Patriot League Championships for the second consecutive year and earned its sixth Triple Crown in program history at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison defeated second-place Navy by more than 70 points behind a league-leading six gold medals. (May 1, 2010)
Bucknell's Rendos and LeValley Finish NCAA Wrestling Championships as First Pair of Bison All-Americans
For the first time in school history, Bucknell has two wrestling All-Americans in the same year. Senior Andy Rendos and junior Kevin LeValley both concluded their NCAA runs and finished in the top-seven of their brackets. Rendos earned his second consecutive All-America honor with a sixth-place finish at 165, while LeValley grabbed his first All-America citation with a seventh-place showing at 149. (March 20, 2010)
Bucknell Women's Track and Field Wins 13th Patriot League Championship Title
Bucknell women's track and field won its eighth team title in nine years, defeating the defending champion Navy at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships at West Point's Gillis Fieldhouse. The Bison also added to their list of individual champions, getting wins from Lindsay Appel, Chelsey Musante and Casey Krause. (Feb. 21, 2010)
Bucknell Women's Rowing Claims Fifth Patriot League Title in a Row!
The Bucknell women's rowing team won its fifth consecutive Patriot League title Sunday morning on the Cooper River. The Bison won the varsity eight and second varsity eight races, and took second in the varsity four as it totaled a record 35 team points. Navy was second in the team standings with 31 points. Bison head coach Stephen Kish was awarded his fourth Patriot League Coach of the Year citation, while the varsity eight was named Boat of the Year for the fifth straight year. (April 25, 2010)
Winter's Overtime Goal Sends Bucknell Men's Lax into Postseason
Austin Winter, one of six Bucknell seniors honored before the final regular-season game of the year, made sure that his Senior Day game would not also be the last one of his career when he scored in the final minute over overtime to lift the Bison to an 8-7 victory over a never-say-die Colgate team at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. While a loss would have ended their season, the sudden-death victory sent the Bison into the Patriot League Tournament, where they will face tournament host and No. 1 seed Army. (April 24, 2010)
Second-Place Finishes by Warren and Keath Help Bucknell Women's Swimming and Diving Hold Off Colgate for Second Place at PL Championships
Entering Saturday's final day of the Patriot League Championships, the Bucknell women's squad had a 55-point advantage over two-time defending champion Colgate for second place. The Raiders cut into that lead significantly on the final day, but six top-three finishes by Bison helped Bucknell take second place at the event, marking its best finish since 2007. (Feb. 20, 2010)
Bucknell Wrestling Splits Duals with No. 1 Iowa, Rutgers at Sojka Pavilion
Bucknell's Sojka Pavilion has hosted 172 basketball games since it opened nearly seven years ago. However, Friday evening, wrestling took center stage as the Bison hosted No. 1 Iowa and Rutgers in front of a record 2,127 fans. Bucknell dropped a 29-7 decision to the 22-time national champion Hawkeyes, but bounced back with a 26-12 victory over EIWA foe Rutgers. (Nov. 27, 2009)
