CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) – The Bucknell women's rowing team won its fifth consecutive Patriot League title Sunday morning on the Cooper River. The Bison won the varsity eight and second varsity eight races, and took second in the varsity four as it totaled a record 35 team points. Navy was second in the team standings with 31 points. Bison head coach Stephen Kish was awarded his fourth Patriot League Coach of the Year citation, while the varsity eight was named Boat of the Year for the fifth straight year.
Bucknell and Navy are the only two teams to win Patriot League titles. The Mids claimed the crown in 2005, the first year rowing was a Patriot League-sponsored sport. Since that time the Bison have dominated, winning five straight titles. Bucknell has registered at least 27 points in the team standings every year since 2006 and has swept all three races twice (2007, 2009).
The Bison varsity eight posted its fifth consecutive win at the Patriot League Championships, finishing in 7:11.60, 2.20 seconds ahead of second-place Navy. The second varsity eight was victorious by more than nine seconds over the Mids, while the varsity four was 4.20 seconds behind Navy, but more than 50 seconds ahead of its next closest competitor, Colgate.
Scoring for the events is done in a 6-5-4-3-2-1 order for the varsity four, 12-10-8-6-4-2 for the second varsity eight and 18-15-12-9-6-3 for the varsity eight, meaning Bucknell had to finish at least one spot ahead of Navy in the morning's final race, the varsity eight, to claim the title.
Holy Cross finished third in the team standings, while Colgate was fourth. New Patriot League member MIT and Lehigh rounded out the six-team field.
Bucknell's senior class – Olivia Knodt, Devon Mitchell, Meghan O'Reilly, Elizabeth Regan, Kerry Sullivan, Kim Weaver and Mary Wilson - became the second consecutive group of Bison seniors to claim four Patriot League titles during their careers.
The Patriot League title for women's rowing marks the fourth for a Bucknell team in 2009-10. The Bison women's cross country, women's indoor track & field and men's soccer squads previously claimed championships.
The Patriot League Championships marks the beginning of the championship portion of Bucknell's schedule. The Bison will continue to race in premier events next weekend when they race in the New England/Mid-Atlantic Regional back on the Cooper River.
