LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Patrick Selwood (Darnestown, Md./The Heights School), an Academic All-American and all-conference defender on the Bison men's soccer team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in the Terrace Room on campus on May 4.
Selwood won the Alvin F. Jackson Jr. Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award, presented for outstanding academic and athletic achievement, and future promise as Bucknell alumni. Selwood shared the award with Kim Weaver of the women's rowing team.
In addition to Selwood and Weaver, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class. Patriot League and Eastern champion swimmer Courtney Warren and two-time All-America wrestler Andy Rendos won the Mathewson Awards.
Selwood carries a 3.72 cumulative grade-point average as a double major in philosophy and religion, and last fall he became Bucknell's 118th national Academic All-American. Selwood was a major part of Bucknell's winningest senior class and helped lead the Bison to a record-setting 17-6 record in 2009. For the second time in the last four years, Bucknell captured the Patriot League title and won a first-round game in the NCAA Tournament.
Selwood enjoyed a terrific senior year for the Bison. The quarterback of a record-setting defense, he was named MVP of the Patriot League Tournament after leading the team to back-to-back 1-0 wins over Lafayette and American. In fact, Bucknell broke the school record for shutouts in a season with 12, with 10 of those coming by 1-0 margins.
Selwood was a First Team All-Patriot League defender in 2009 after earning second team honors as a junior. He missed only one start in his last two seasons and was the leader of Bucknell's defense from his center back position. Selwood was named to all-tournament teams in each of the five tournaments in which Bucknell played over the last two years, including the Nike Fall Classic, the Mayor's Cup and the Patriot League Tournament this season. He was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-East team following the season.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 3,500 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 15 of 19 years.
Bucknell annually ranks among the national leaders in graduation rates. In addition, Bucknell ranks fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 118 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
