LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis' Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) was named Second Team All-Patriot League on Tuesday, becoming the first Bison freshman to be selected to an all-league team. Katten led Bucknell in singles and doubles wins in his freshman campaign as the team advanced to its fourth straight Patriot League Tournament semifinal.
Katten's selection marks the fifth consecutive year Bucknell has place at least one player on an all-league team. All-league teams and major awards are decided by a vote of Patriot League head coaches who cannot vote for their own athletes.
Katten finished his first season in the Orange and Blue by going 17-14 in singles and 19-9 in doubles while playing primarily at the No. 3 position in both. In doubles, Katten tallied a 10-1 record with classmate Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) during the spring season with the lone loss coming 8-6 to Army during the regular season.
In postseason play, Katten played a major role in keeping Bucknell's tournament hopes alive. He and Zimmer defeated their Lafayette opponents at the No. 3 position in the first round to secure the doubles point for the Bison. Katten then went on to clinch the overall team victory with a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles, advancing Bucknell to the semifinals.
Bucknell finished the 2009-10 season with a 9-12 overall record and went 3-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison were knocked out of the Patriot League Tournament in the semifinals by the eventual champion Navy. The loss ended a stretch in which they won eight of 11 matches. After starting the year 1-8, the Bison's success down the homestretch resulted in one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in program history.
