LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va/University), a team captain on the softball team, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held in Terrace Room on Tuesday, May 4.
Finkel won the Robert A. Latour Service Award, presented to senior athletes "for extraordinary service to Bucknell and local communities". Finkel shared the award with Kyle Anthony of the track and field team, who was the male selection.
An environmental studies major and biology and anthropology minor, Finkel has dedicated much of her time away from the softball field to promoting environmentally responsible practices. This year she served as the first Bucknell Dining Student Sustainability Coordinator, developing initiatives such as the reusable to-go container. She has also conducted research and worked with a wetlands creation project as an intern with the university's Geology Department and Environmental Center. Away from Bucknell, Finkel was named the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Conservation Division's state volunteer of the year in 2007.
Finkel's efforts extend to more issues than the environmentally friendly. A native of Morgantown, W. Va., she is also highly involved in the College Democrats, has served as the vice president of Students for Fair Trade and is a three-year representative with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the field, Finkel has put up career numbers in her senior campaign while serving as a team co-captain. Now Bucknell's starting left fielder, Finkel has played every position on the field at least once during her career and will lead the Bison to their third consecutive Patriot League Tournament later this month.
Bucknell is a highly-selective, privately endowed liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,583 undergraduate students. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League and has full membership along with American, Army, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Bucknell has won the Presidents' Cup, signifying the Patriot League's all-sports champion, in 15 of 19 years, including 11 of the last 12.
Bucknell annually ranks among the national leaders in graduation rate and is fifth in Division I in the total number of CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 118 national Academic All-Americans since 1970.
