LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell head women's soccer coach Ben Landis has announced that senior defender Amanda Citron (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and senior midfielder Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) have been named team co-captains for the 2010 season. Citron, who was also a captain as a junior last season, will be entering her fourth season as a starting central defender, while Stokes has been a three-year regular as an outside midfielder.
"I am extremely proud to announce that our team captains for 2010 will be seniors Amanda Citron and Brooke Stokes," said Landis. "This duo will be a great pairing as they each lead very naturally in their own ways that truly represent their own personalities. I believe that both represent our team well, our ideals and goals, and symbolize what we want from our student-athletes in how they are scholars, accountable for their actions, strong work ethic, how they take ownership of their experiences, communicate openly and honestly, all while having a good sense of humor. They know that they represent not just the 2010 team but a very proud program and I know they are ready for the challenges ahead. Amanda and Brooke will be well supported by a very strong senior class who will also play a big role in our team and have the full support of a coaching staff and team that will work incredibly hard to capture the Patriot League championship in November."
In her first three years with the Bison, Citron has played in all 59 of the team's matches. She has started 56 of those contests, including all 39 over the last two seasons. In 2009 Citron earned All-Patriot League honors for the first time with a Second Team citation. She earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors last season after helping Bucknell to consecutive road wins over Army and Holy Cross, and she was part of a defense that posted five shutouts and held the opposition to just a single goal on seven other occasions.
"I am very excited to be elected captain for the second year," said Citron. "I could not have more supportive teammates and coaches, and it is an honor that they have selected me, along with Brooke, to be their captain. After my past semester abroad [in Spain], I am anxious for the fall season to begin. Our team is comprised of a large upper class that will offer experience and enthusiasm to help the incoming freshman understand what it means to compete for the Patriot League championship. Together we have high goals and with the strength of our team both on and off the field, we strive to meet and surpass them this fall."
Stokes has been a fixture for the Bison on the right side, and last season she set career highs in goals (2), assists (3) and points (7). She scored a key insurance goal in an important 3-1 Patriot League win over Navy, she assisted on the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Army, and she scored the game-winning goal with just 1:41 left in a 2-1 win over UMBC. Stokes has four goals and six assists for 14 points in her career.
"I am very excited and honored to be selected as a captain," said Stokes. "I feel privileged to have the opportunity to represent a wonderful group of teammates and look forward to working with Amanda and the coaching staff to lead our talented team as we strive to build upon a successful spring season and compete for the Patriot League championship in the fall."
Bucknell finished 10-8-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Patriot League last season. It was the fifth straight year that the team recorded double-digit wins and qualified for the four-team Patriot League Tournament. The Bison graduated six seniors from the 2009 squad but return nine of their 11 goal-scorers (and 23 of 27 goals), including Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Christa Matlack.
