LEWISBURG, Pa. - Thanks to an 11-7 victory at Army on Sunday, the Bucknell baseball team will be playing in its second Patriot League Tournament Championship Series in three years later this week, and on Monday the Patriot League announced the dates and game times of the best-of-three series at Holy Cross' Fitton Field. The Bison and Crusaders will square off in game one Friday, May 21, at 6 p.m. Games two and three (if necessary) will be played as part of a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
The winner of this weekend's series will earn the Patriot League's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin with the Regionals June 4-7. Bucknell (23-32), which is the fourth seed in this year's Patriot League Tournament, has captured four Patriot League crowns (1996, 2001, 2003, 2008).
The Bison claimed a three-game series at top-seeded Army this past weekend. Highlighting the weekend were four home runs by Doug Shribman, who now owns both the Bucknell and Patriot League single-season records with 17 home runs.
Holy Cross (25-24) is the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament and took a best-of-three series at Lehigh this past weekend. The Crusaders captured game three Sunday afternoon by a 3-0 score behind solid pitching from Chris Blanchard and Nate Koneski.
Bucknell and Holy Cross met in a four-game series at Depew Field last month and the Crusaders won three of the four games. The Bison hold a 44-31 edge in the all-time series. Bucknell defeated Holy Cross 10-4 in a first-round matchup in 2001 at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium in the teams' only previous Patriot League Tournament meeting.
The Patriot League Tournament Championship Series was originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23, but was moved to accommodate Bucknell's Sunday graduation.
