COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius) and Amanda Skonezney (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) both scored four goals and Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) made 12 saves, leading the Bucknell women's water polo team to a 12-10 victory over Harvard Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Championship. With the win, the Bison will advance to Sunday's fifth-place game against the winner of Saturday's Brown-Maryland contest.
Skonezney entered the game with 21 goals this season, but found the back of the net four times, including at the buzzer of the first half, giving Bucknell a 7-6 halftime advantage. Canonica, who led the team in points coming in, equaled Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) for the most points in a game by a Bison player this season with seven as she dished out a team-high three assists. She now has 97 points this year.
Carter's 12 saves pushed her season total to 245, a new career high. She has posted a dozen double-figure save outings this season, and now has 705 stops in her four-year career.
Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) also had a solid game with two goals and an assist off the bench, while Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) totaled one goal, one assist, two steals and three ejections drawn.
Bucknell's (16-10) defense was solid as six different players collected two steals.
The Bison avenged an early season loss to the Crimson at the Elite Eight Tournament. In that meeting Harvard defeated Bucknell 13-12 in overtime.
On Friday evening at the CWPA Eastern Championship banquet, four Bison were named all-conference as Carter, Canonica and Rozas were named First Team All-CWPA Southern Division and Kennan landed on the second team. Additionally, head coach John Abdou was named the Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.
Bucknell will wrap up its 2010 campaign Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against either Brown or host Maryland.
