LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bison men's and women's soccer teams welcomed more than 150 members of the Lewisburg AYSO youth soccer program for a Tuesday evening skills clinic on the Bucknell campus. Bucknell head coaches Brendan Nash and Ben Landis said the turnout was as terrific as the weather, which was picture-perfect.
Student-athletes from both the men's and women's teams put the youngsters through a number of fun and helpful drills. The session was orchestrated by AYSO volunteer coordinator coach administrator John Dunton.
It was not the first time the Bison teams have incorporated the local youth programs and clubs into their seasonal regimens. They hold a number of free clinics throughout the year, host summer camps on campus and use youth players as ball kids.
"Our student-athletes really enjoy our free clinics with the community," said Nash. "We have stressed the importance of giving back and the important role our programs play in it. However, I think our student-athletes actually enjoy the clincs as much the young boys and girls. They all had someone influence their passion for soccer at an early age, and they like to place themselves in the same role for the young soccer players in our community.
"For our staff it is very rewarding when you see 150-plus young soccer players and 50 Division I student-athletes with big smiles on their faces at the end of the day."
