LEWISBURG, Pa. - Six members of the Bucknell men's lacrosse squad have been named to the All-Patriot League team, including senior attackman Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes), who became only the second player in league history to earn four first team citations. Winter, junior midfielder Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) and junior faceoff man Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) were all named to the All-Patriot League First Team, while sophomore attackman Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), junior defenseman Alex Lyons (Owings Mills, Md./Boys' Latin) and sophomore defenseman Jason Neithamer (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) were second team selections.
Bucknell's six All-Patriot League picks tied for the most in the league along with Army. Navy had five, Colgate four, Lafayette three, Lehigh three and Holy Cross one.
One of the top scorers in school and league history, Winter earned a First Team All-Patriot League nod for the fourth straight year. The only other league player to do that was Army's Tim Pearson from 1999 to 2002. Only six players in league history have earned four all-league citations of any kind: Winter, Pearson, Bucknell's Chris Cara (2002-05, 3x first team), Colgate's Brandon Corp (2006-09, 3x first team), Army's John Walker (2003-06, 1x first team) and Lafayette goalie Duncan Woodard (1998-01, 2x first team).
Winter is Bucknell's top point-producer in 2010 with 43 points on 20 goals and 23 assists. He is headed toward leading the team in scoring for the fourth straight year. He is one of only three players in school history to record 100 career assists and now ranks No. 3 all-time with 117. Winter's 193 points are fourth-most in program history, and he needs only three more to catch Hall of Famer Justin Zackey for third on Bucknell's all-time list. Winter also ranks fourth in assists and seventh in points on the Patriot League all-time lists.
Winter has a point in every game in 2010 - and in 57 of his 58 career appearances. He had a nine-point game with two goals and a career-high seven assists against Lafayette, and he had seven points in a win over Lehigh and six in a win over Jacksonville. But of all the goals he has scored through the years, perhaps none was bigger than his overtime goal against Colgate last week that sent the Bison to the postseason.
Among the Patriot League leaders this season, Winter ranks third in assists and fourth in points, and he ranks 15th in the nation in assists per game.
Clarke is also a repeat First Team All-Patriot League pick, as he was named for the second straight year at the faceoff position. A former walk-on who began doing faceoffs as a sophomore in 2009, Clarke is now one of the top faceoff men in program history. In Bucknell's most recent game against Colgate, he recorded his 300th career faceoff win, tying Ryan Goodman's school record. Earlier in the year Clarke became Bucknell's all-time ground ball leader.
A two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week this season, Clarke leads the Patriot League in both faceoff percentage (.595) and ground balls per game, and on the national leaderboard he is fifth in ground balls and eighth in faceoff percentage. He had 10-GB games against both Duke and Towson this season, and he has won 70 percent or more of his draws six times in 2010.
Klipstein earned his first all-conference honor after pumping 32 goals in the regular season, the most ever by a Bison midfielder. Klipstein is the third-highest-scoring middie in the nation this year, and his 20 goals in Patriot League play was No. 1 in the conference.
Klipstein had a monster game against Lafayette on March 20, when he tied the Bucknell record with eight goals in a game. He was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after that performance. The only other Bison to score eight in a game was Jim Ball against Penn State all the way back in 1979.
Klipstein had 15 career goals entering the 2010 season, but this year he has produced multiple goals 10 times. In addition to the eight goals against Lafayette, he had five against Holy Cross and three each against Navy and Penn State.
Streep has his second all-league certificate in as many years after he captured second team honors as an attackman. Streep was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a first team all-league selection as a midfielder last season. He started and finished the regular season as a middie in 2010, but he spent seven games as an attackman when senior Tim Brandau went down with an injury late in the Navy game.
Streep ranks second on the team in goals (22) and assists (12) and third in points (34). It is his second straight campaign with at least 20 goals and 30 points. He ranks 10th in the Patriot League in points per game and tied for fourth with two game-winning goals.
Streep has a point in each of the last 12 games, including a season-high seven points with four goals and three assists against Jacksonville. In his first game as an attackman, he scored four goals in a win over Hobart, and he also had hat tricks against Ohio State and Army.
Lyons and Neithamer are both first-time all-league honorees. After gaining experience in some other roles prior to this season, both became full-time starters on close defense for the first time in 2010, and they currently have Bucknell ranked No. 8 nationally in scoring defense.
Lyons has become one of the league's top takeaway defenders. In fact, he ranks third in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.69). He is a two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, and he also ranks among the team leaders with 39 ground balls.
Neithamer has had an excellent year on defense, and he is also a key wing man on faceoffs. One of the top ground ball men in the league, he leads all Bison long poles in that category with 48. Neithamer was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday.
Lafayette, Army and Navy captured the major awards this season. Lafayette's Steve Serling was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year; Army's Bill Henderson was the Defensive Player of the Year; Army's Garrett Thul was the Rookie of the Year; Navy's RJ Wickham was the Goalie of the Year; and Lafayette's Terry Mangan was named Coach of the Year.
Bucknell is the No. 4 seed at this weekend's Patriot League Tournament. The Bison will face No. 1 seed and tournament host Army on Friday at 3 p.m. on CBS College Sports. The Bucknell-Army winner will face the Navy-Lafayette winner in the championship game on Sunday at 3 p.m., also on CBS College Sports.
