Bucknell Men's Tennis Gets Past Lehigh 4-3

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis earned the doubles point and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) pulled out a three-set victory in singles to give the Bison a 4-3 win over Lehigh at the Ulrich Varsity Courts on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, Bucknell (8-11, 3-2) secures the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
With its 3-2 Patriot League record, Bucknell trails Army and Navy in the standings. Complete pairings for the tournament, hosted by Bucknell April 23-25, will be announced next Tuesday.
Bucknell's second and third doubles teams each extended their winning streaks by defeating their Lehigh (8-11, 1-4) opponents. Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) won at No. 2 over Cameron Silbert and Arnoldo Pacheco, 8-6. Katten and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) won 8-4 over Matt Savran and Leland Richardson at third doubles. It was the third consecutive win for both Bison duos.
Katten had to put in some extra effort for his win at No. 3 singles. The freshman dropped the first set in a tiebreaker to Leland before winning the final two, 6-4, 6-3. Cohenca also fought through a three-set match but was less lucky. The Bison sophomore fell 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 to Laffey at the No. 2 position.
Winning in straight sets were Marcil and Zimmer. Marcil improved to 3-0 in singles this spring with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Savran. Zimmer cruised through the first set against Ryan Krueger, 6-2, before being challenged in the second. Zimmer pulled through 7-6, however, claiming his sixth consecutive victory.
Bucknell will be on the courts one more time before hosting the Patriot League Tournament. The Bison will welcome Bloomsburg to the Bucknell Tennis Courts on Wednesday, April 21. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start and will be preceded by Senior Day activities.
