
Bucknell Women's Tennis Takes 7-0 Win Over Robert Morris in Tournament Tune-up

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's tennis swept its second straight opponent with a 7-0 win over Robert Morris at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Tuesday. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) won their 16th consecutive match at doubles as the Bison head into the Patriot League Tournament with an 11-6 overall record.
Varela and Lucido made easy work of their opponents from Robert Morris (2-17) at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0. The victory moves Varela into a tie for third with former teammate Paulina Gamboa on the Bucknell all-time doubles list. The current senior is now 71-30 in her doubles career.
Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) had a slightly close match at the second position, but the Bison duo still came away with the 8-4 victory over Samantha Alves and Tiffany Meinert. Playing together for the first time, Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) also had a smooth victory at doubles, winning 8-1 over Ekaterina Rudneva and Sara Meier.
At No. 1 singles, Varela defeated Alves 6-3, 6-1. The win was the 15th straight for Varela, bringing her to within one victory of tying Nada Curcic for the program's longest winning streak since at least 1993.
Tuzhikova also made especially quick work of her singles opponent, dispatching Meier 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Casey won by the same score, defeating Rudneva at No. 5 singles. Also earning victories were Dwojewski over Meinert (6-0, 6-1) at No. 4 and Calcaterra over Isabella Nouvella (6-3, 6-1) at No. 3. Lucido claimed her 10th consecutive singles win with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Clarissa Chen at No. 2.
Bucknell will now travel to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Patriot League Tournament. The No. 2 Bison will face No. 7 Lafayette in the first round at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 16. The winner will go on to play the winner of No. 3 Navy vs. No. 6 Holy Cross.
