Bucknell Women's Tennis Makes Quick Work of Lafayette in 4-0 Win at Patriot League Tournament

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Bucknell women's tennis advanced to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals with a quick 4-0 victory over Lafayette in Hamilton, N.Y., on Friday night. The Bison (12-6) gave up a total of just five games in the five completed matches. They will continue their run for the league title at 2 p.m. tomorrow against Navy.
Bucknell's dominance began with two swift doubles matches. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) finished first, taking an 8-0 win off Rachel Rohinsky and Emily DeLuca at the No. 1 position. At No. 3 doubles, Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No.7) completed the point with an 8-1 victory over Katherine Charchalis and Kristie Cavanaugh.
Varela and Lucido's doubles winning streak now stands at 17 matches. That is the most consecutive wins for a single Bison duo in program history.
Varela took a step closer to claiming Bucknell's longest singles winning streak with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kelsey Grad. The Bison senior has won her last 16 matches, tying her for second all-time. The most consecutive singles wins is 17, set by Sara Allen in 1992.
Lucido and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) ensured Bucknell's advancement to the semifinals. Lucido defeated Rohinksy 6-0, 6-2 for her 11th straight victory, while Calcaterra was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Charchalis.
The Bison secured their team victory so quickly, three matches went unfinished and a fourth did not make it out of warm-ups. Bucknell will try to equal that efficiency tomorrow against the Mids, a team it defeated 6-1 in the regular season.
