NINETY-SIX, S.C. - Bucknell sophomore Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) grabbed a share of the lead at the Big South Championship by carding a school-record, 2-under-par 70 in picture-perfect weather conditions Monday at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor. Lee's record-setting round contained a tournament-best six birdies, and it propelled the Bison to a 310 team score and a tie for fourth place with 36 holes remaining.
Seeded sixth coming into the tournament, Bucknell is knotted up with Gardner-Webb in fourth place. Charleston Southern posted a 294 to claim the first-round lead. Defending champion Coastal Carolina is second at 303, with Radford one more back at 304. Behind the Bison are Winthrop (313), Presbyterian (316), High Point (329) and Holy Cross (344).
For the Bison, their 310 score was their best showing in a Big South Championship round since joining the league in 2003. Their previous low was 314 in the final round of the 2006 event.
On Oct. 11, 2008 at the Rutgers Invitational, Lee posted an even-par 72, marking the first round of even par or better in program history. She bettered that on Monday, going 1-under on each side en route to the first red number in the 12-year history of Bison women's golf.
Lee is tied for the individual lead with Olivia Jordan-Higgins of Charleston Southern, a four-time All-Big South selection who has been the conference runner-up in each of the last two seasons. Lee is one shot ahead of Katelyn Bensch of Charleston Southern, two better than Radford's Megan Leineweber and three ahead of defending champion and four-time all-leaguer Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina.
Her 70 is tied for the fourth-lowest round in Big South Championship history, trailing only a 68 and two 69s. Lee is the 11th player in tournament history to record a 70.
Lee, who was named to the Big South All-Academic Team on Sunday evening, was not the only Bucknell player to turn in a solid opening round. Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) carded a 77, matching her best Big South score. Jurenovich, who tied for eighth here as a freshman in 2008, is now tied for 11th after 18 holes.
Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude), playing for the first time this spring after returning from an illness, went out in 38 and finished with an 81, while Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) both shot 82.
In round two, Bucknell will be paired with Gardner-Webb and Winthrop and will tee off between 8:50 and 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
