Bucknell Women's Tennis Wins 10th Match in Lafayette Sweep

EASTON, Pa. – Bucknell women's tennis returned to its dominating form, defeating Lafayette 7-0 in Easton, Pa., on Sunday afternoon. No Bison player allowed more than two games to her opponent, securing the sweep and improving the team's record to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League.
Bucknell opened the day with a sweep in doubles action. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) defeated Caitlin Gordon and Kelsey Grad 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, while the remaining two Bison teams each won by a score of 8-1. Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) paired up for the win at No. 2, while Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) won at No. 3.
The Bison had a similarly easy time in singles. Lucido won at No. 2 over Grad, 6-2, 6-2, for the closest match of the day. Varela and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) both won 6-0, 6-0, while Iepuras and Calcaterra allowed only one game to their Lafayette opponents during the match. Casey won the first set at sixth singles, 6-1, before her opponent defaulted.
Varela and Lucido's win at doubles brought their winning streak to 15 matches. Each player also maintained their success at singles as Varela has now won 14 straight and Lucido is at 9-0 in her most recent stretch.
Bucknell will host Robert Morris in its next match at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13. The match will be the final tune-up before Bucknell travels to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Patriot League Championships April 16-18. Senior Day, originally scheduled for this Tuesday, has been moved to the Bison's contest against Bloomsburg on Wednesday, April 21.
