OLEAN, N.Y. – Bucknell women's tennis earned its second straight match victory, defeating St. Bonaventure 7-0 on Saturday. The Bison have now won their first two matches of the weekend, improving their record to 2-4 on the season.
The Bison continued their dominance at first and third doubles. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) teamed up at the No. 1 position for an 8-2 win over the Bonnies' Maria Barousse and Amanda Pallikunnel. Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) won 8-0 over Riley Archer and Kalia Garcia at the third position. It was the second consecutive 8-0 win for Tuzhikova and Iepuras who won over their opponents from Niagara yesterday by the same tally.
Following its strong showing at doubles, Bucknell went on to sweep the singles action. Lucido and Varela again won at the top two spots, with Lucido coming out on top over Manuela Marin-Salcedo 7-6, 6-0 and Varela winning easily over Barousse by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) claimed her first singles win of the spring, defeating Kathryn Kvas 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Iepuras earned her second win of the day, winning a marathon match at No. 4 singles over Pallikunnel. The Bucknell sophomore lost the first set 6-4 but bounced back for a 7-5 win in the next set and a 10-2 victory in the super tiebreak.
Lucido's win improves her career singles record to 50-24. That total moves the junior into a tie for ninth all-time at Bucknell. Also making her way up the list is Iepuras, who is tied for 16th with a career record of 36-13.
Rounding out the Bison's list of wins was Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Bucknell is back in action for its final match of the weekend tomorrow, taking on Syracuse at 11 a.m.
