LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field will wrap up its indoor season with the IC4A and ECAC Championships in Boston this weekend. Competition at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 6 and resumes at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
MEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Bucknell will send 15 individuals and three relay teams to compete this weekend. Among them is Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central), the only Bison currently scheduled to compete in two events. Anthony will take part in both the triple and long jump.
- The Bison remained among the top teams in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region poll. Bucknell improved one spot from a week ago, moving into sixth place.
- Bucknell sent nine individuals and two relays to the IC4A Championships a year ago. Some of the top performers included Ryan White (Elkins Park, Pa./Father Judge), who was named All-East with a seventh-place performance in the heptathlon. Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) ran a personal-best 7.65 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, a mark that still ranks fourth all-time at Bucknell. Anthony also finished 12th in the triple jump and 20th in the long jump.
- The Bison have a lot of experience at the championships. This year's trip to the IC4As will be the fourth for Anthony and Gregory Baxter (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley). Senior Conor McNamara and junior Clayton Smith will both be making their third appearance, and five more Bison will be making their second appearance.
- Bucknell had plenty to be proud of the last time it was on the track. The Bison finished second at the Patriot League Championships, just six points behind Army. Event winners included White in the heptathlon, Anthony in the triple jump and Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) in the 400. Arent was also part of the winning 4x400 relay. Joining him were John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central), Evan Novakowski (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School).
- Hicks' success was not limited to running the anchor leg of the championship 4x400 team. The freshman was named the 2010 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Meet. Hicks finished third in the 60 and 200 meters.
- While those Bison who won their respective events earned first-team honors, Bucknell was not without its share of second-team selections. Anthony (long jump), Smith (800 meters), Tim Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) (shot put) and Yehl (60m hurdles) also earned all-league citations.
WOMEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Eleven Bison will make the trip to Boston to compete in eight different events. Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) has earned a spot in two events, participating in the shot put and weight throw for the second consecutive year.
- Bucknell sent a relatively small unit to last year's championships. Competing individually were Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X), Musante and former Bison Megan Hathaway. Bucknell also competed in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Frey cleared 12-1 1/2 in the pole vault for ninth place, while Fulmer ran a personal-record 4:59.16 in the mile.
- Musante had a stellar performance at last year's ECACs. The current senior finished fifth in the weight throw and seventh in the shot put, becoming the first Bison woman to score in two individual events and earn All-East honors. She was also the first Bucknellian shot putter to be named an All-East performer.
- Like the men's team, the Bison women bring a significant amount of experience to the ECAC Championships this weekend. Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands) is the most experienced, having already made three trips to the ECACs in her career. Seniors Amy Mantush (Hazelton, Pa./Drums) and Allison Janda (Plymouth, Mich./Salem), and juniors Frey and Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) have each made two prior appearances.
- Bucknell claimed its 13th Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championship title in program history and the eighth in nine years two weeks ago, defeating the defending champions from Navy by 72 points. Mantush was named the Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the pentathlon and high jump, and placing fourth in the triple jump. Mantush was also named the Field Athlete of the Meet after last year's outdoor championships.
- Mantush was not the only Bison to bring home some individual wins and receive First Team All-Patriot League accolades. Musante defended her title in the weight throw and added shot put champion to her resume. Lindsay Appel (Wexford, Pa./North Alleghany) won the 400 meters and Casey Krause (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) won the triple jump. The 4x800 relay of Fulmer, Janda, Caroline Tolli (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and Pierce also earned gold.
- Bucknell also had a trio earn Second Team All-Patriot League accolades in Moniz, Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Sasha Hornock (Dover, Pa./Dover). Moniz earned the honor in the mile, Bella in the shot put and Hornock in the 60-meter dash.
- As if all the titles weren't enough, Mantush and Musante added to their strong weekend by setting school records. Mantush, who already held Bucknell's top mark in the high jump, tied her career-best mark of 5-8. Musante also was the previous record holder in the shot put, but she improved on her distance, posting a mark of 47-10 3/4.
LOOKING AHEAD
The ECAC and IC4A Championships put an end to the Bison's indoor track and field season. Bucknell's outdoor schedule gets underway soon, however, with the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md., and the Susquehanna Invitational in Selinsgrove on March 27.
