LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell softball's Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) became the third Bison this month to claim a Patriot League award, being selected the Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The freshman pitched a complete game and allowed just one run on one hit in Bucknell's 9-1 victory over Coppin State this weekend.
MacLean drew her fifth start of the season against the Eagles and helped the Bison to a win in game two of a tripleheader. She struck out a career-high seven batters walked just three. MacLean also did not allow an earned run for the second consecutive game.
The win brought MacLean's season record to 2-1. Those wins came in her last two outings, including a 9-1 decision in five innings over North Dakota at the Crowne Plaza LAX Showcase in Los Angeles. MacLean's strong play in her last two appearances has improved her season ERA to 5.10 and she leads the Bison in strikeouts (18) and opponent batting average (.281).
The honor is the first of MacLean's career. She joins classmate Bridget Gates (Milford, Conn./Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall) and Lauren Fry (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield) as league award winners this season. Gates was named the Rookie of the Week after the George Mason Invitational, while Fry was selected as the Player of the Week during the last voting period.
Bucknell is 7-7 after taking two of three games off Coppin State last Sunday. The Bison will travel to Philadelphia for a doubleheader against Drexel at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before hosting Holy Cross in their home and Patriot League opener April 3-4.
