ALBANY, N.Y. - The Bucknell men's lacrosse squad dropped its fourth one-goal game of the season on Saturday, 7-6 at Albany after Great Danes goalie John Carroll made a save on a potential tying shot with two seconds remaining. Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) scored two goals and Billy Eisenreich (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had a goal and two assists for the Bison, now 4-4 on the season.
Bucknell came into the game leading the Patriot League in shooting percentage and had 32 goals in its previous two games, but in this one they managed just six goals on 39 shots. The Bison outshot Albany 39-22, won the ground ball battle 39-20 and secured 11 of the 17 faceoffs with regular starter Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) back in the lineup. But the statistical edge in those key categories was negated by 14 saves by Carroll, including six in the fourth quarter.
A goal by Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) with 2:42 left in the first half snapped a 3-3 tie and gave the Bison a one-goal cushion at intermission, but they would not score again until the fourth quarter. Dave Brock's third goal of the day and another from Luke Cometti with 2:37 left in the third gave Albany a 5-4 lead.
Klipstein tied the game at 5-apiece early in the fourth quarter, but Rocky Bonitatibus and Kyle Brunk scored just 1:07 apart to put the Great Danes up 7-5 with 5:36 to play. In between the two goals, Bucknell's Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) intercepted a pass, but his breakaway attempt was turned aside by Carroll. The Bison got one back with 4:43 left on an unassisted goal by Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), trimming the deficit to 7-6.
Albany won the faceoff, but with 1:25 left Jason Foreit (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) forced a turnover, and the Bison went to work to try to get the game tied. Carroll made a save on Streep with about 50 seconds remaining, but Bucknell forced a turnover on the Albany clear attempt. After a timeout, Klipstein shot wide with 12 seconds left, then Bucknell went to Streep on the re-start, but he was denied by Carroll just before the final buzzer.
Clarke went 9-for-15 at the X and picked up eight ground balls, while long-stick midfielder John Scally (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) also nabbed eight ground balls. Kyle Feeney (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) went the distance in goal and made five saves.
It was the first-ever meeting between Bucknell and Albany. Despite winning four of the last seven America East championships, Albany entered the game winless in six tries, although three of the losses came against nationally ranked foes.
Bucknell will have another non-league came on Tuesday at Penn State at 7:30 p.m.
